I was a little apprehensive going into this one because honestly I'm a huge wuss when it comes to horror and I was afraid this would be too much. And while there is some horror, it mostly comes from the people wielding power they should never have had and the violence they inflict to keep that power. In a way this was an empowering read and once I understood that I completely devoured the rest of the book.

So many things I'd like to say. Most of them opinion based, which I don't typically share, but one I feel is important enough to mention.

This writer keeps brushing past any and all trauma. It happens, or you hear about it, then it never or almost never gets mentioned again. Your only friend gets raped at 13? How awful, but I have to talk with the rapist's son real quick. Let me abandon you in this hallway, byebye. And the next time I see this rapist? I don't even think once about the abuse my best friend suffered... I mean, what? Immanuelle is supposed to really care about the innocents, that's her entire motivation for everything, so I have to assume weird writing. Especially because this happens with all the tragedies.

The plot for this book was really intriguing, so I'm open to giving this first time author a second chance, I can see her becoming better at her craft. Just, more on emotion on the page, please!

This is an interesting feminist tale about witches, religion, and family. It has so many good elements in it, a genuinely spooky/sometimes terrifying feel (perfect for October); POC main character, a fantastic grip on patriarchal societies and the horrors that it can bring. It also had some very frustrating parts as well, especially the latter half of the book as a whole. I felt the characterization of all the side characters was very strong, but the "witchy villians" to me felt very one note which was a real shame as they had so much potential. The ending in particular felt very rushed and unfulfilling to me, personally. I do think it's a great book for those who want to step out of the YA world and dip their toes into the broader (sometimes difficult to navigate) world of adult fiction.
