Loved this historical, fantasy, horror mix. It reminds me of The VVitch film in aesthetic, but set in a world the author created. The themes were strong. I kind of get how it felt like a YA because of the love story, but I didn’t mind it.
I like that it connects and explicitly talks about the menstrual cycle. It shows how women are seen through their fertility, but it also connects it to a curse.

Eneste som trakk litt ned var at jeg syns noen ting løste seg for lett akkurat når hun skulle bort fra byen for å møte dne andre bestemoren.

I planned to make this one last much longer than it did, and instead read it in a day. I'm a sucker for blood magic because of the idea of sacrifice intrinsic in that - so I find Immanuelle's place in this story intriguing, how her fate hangs between Bethal and the Darkwood. On the one hand, I think some themes were slightly underbaked - I would have loved more time with the Outskirters, since we were told that it was Immanuelle's father who made her an outsider in Bethal, and in the end we saw little of them (especially at the end). To that end, I expected race to be a more key player in this story, but nonetheless thought this was a beautiful, bloody commentary on sexism and the power men force over women.

Wow, this one absolutely belongs next to The Vvitch as one of the best witch horror pieces. This book was so addicting and immersive, I had no choice but to read it in less than a day. Henderson included a lot of heavy topics and memorable characters that will be sitting with me for awhile. Half a star deducted for
not killing the pedophile at the end with the reasoning of so many deaths have already occurred
. I'm very much looking forward to reading the sequel.
