When I started rereading this series, I didn't remember much after the third book—even though I know I've read further into the series. For some reason, I remember this sixth book being my favorite, even though I had no recollection of what it was about, where the children were staying, or how it ended. But I'm happy to report that I LOVED IT. There's just something about large, expansive buildings and secret passageways that intrigues me. Plus, this is where the formulaic plot starts fraying and we start getting more plot twists, darker subplots, and more humor geared towards adults. After this one, I can honestly say I have NO clue what any of the other books are about and I'm so excited to dive into them!

It's hard to write a unique review for each book in this series because they are all so similar.

Pros: easy read, interesting, love the Baudelaires and the silly style of writing.

Cons: the adults are annoying and frustrating (I'm sure this is fine on purpose, because it's how the kids feel, but it's still not always how I want to feel when reading), sometimes the silliness takes away from the reading style.

I think by this book I was getting a little tired of the SOUE. The language was still enjoyable but the whole thing was getting a mite repetitive and all the books were starting to blend together. By book thirteen I was really only still buying them because they are so pretty all together on the shelf.

The further I get into this series, the more I have to suspend my disbelief in increasingly annoying and preposterous ways. But I'm still enjoying the books, and they're short and sweet.

Loved this instalment and can't wait to continue on!

I liked book 6 more than the last two. I think part of it was because there was actually a glimmer of hope in this one opposed to complete despair. The orphans have one guardian that at least shows a bit of compassion, which is the first time in a few books. They also aren't being treated like slaves this time and it seems that Count Olaf is now as interested in the orphans as they are the triplets which has given them a little bit of a reprieve. I wonder where they'll end up next!
