very good

My review: http://obsessivebookworm.wordpress.com/2012/05/28/a-series-of-unfortunate-events/

Really good series. On my top 10 list! I also recommend watching the series on Netflix.

As good as Book the Fifth! This series is really starting to pick up now, and I’m all for it

4.5 stars

I was almost getting behind this one, seduced by Tim Curry's wonderful reading (though I appreciate Handler's more dour narration with hindsight). But then the business of the elevator kicked in. It's a ballsy move to give away a major plot point in the title and while there have been many events pushed well beyond the boundary of reality so far in this series, this was too much.

I was going to pick apart the reality of climbing down the shaft using just neck ties, extension cables and curtain cords, something that apparently takes 3 hours (because they were terrified the entire time..?), or critique Violet's ludicrous plan to 'rescue' the triplets? I mean, how precisely does heating up iron bars in an oven, carrying them in one hand while descending with the other (a climb that previously took 3 hours with both hands) and then using them to 'melt the iron bars' (despite the fact that if they were hot enough to melt iron, they would have melted themselves), constitute a great plan?

Seriously, we get constantly reminded that Violet is an 'inventor' and she is constantly thinking of impossible inventions in quiet moments, yet when it comes to it her 'inventions' are completely ridiculous and lacking any credibility. Encouraging girls to take up engineering and science is a grand idea, likewise, boys and reading but seriously? Making Violet an actual intelligent inventor would work more effectively. Erm, where was I? Why was I annoyed?

Oh yes, none of that mattered because then Sunny climbed up the lift shaft using just her fucking teeth. So. After that I couldn't care. Even a last minute hint of a deeper conspiracy and an (admittedly funny) actual red herring didn't reprieve the situation.

I'm not sure why I'm still listening to these but for whatever reason (and I really cannot think what it is) I've decided to see this through to the bitter end. Sigh. On we go.
