A shining example of why super fans should not write books about their heroes

An enjoyable love story

The author's love and reverie for Bowie is clearly present in this text and the admiration for his work and attitude is enjoyable. There is little downside to Bowie presented which is a slight detraction, but doesn't run the book.

This is a terrific book from music writer Rob Sheffield. He approaches Bowie's career as a fan, not as a critic. For those of us who admired and loved Bowie's music, but might not have been aficionados of his every musical and cultural nuance, this book hits the sweet spot. It never dives into minutiae or feels heavy handed. It's like coffee with a Bowie fan who wants to share a fair assessment of his hits and misses, his humanity and his struggles.

The book, chaptered by albums and eras, takes us from his early days as David Jones to his passing in 2016 and the luminous "Lazarus" that capped off his career. I'd recommend it to anyone who is looking for an introduction to Bowie, or a high-level appreciation of his life and artistry. If you know the lyrics and session players for every album from "Low" to "Never Let Me Down", this might be a deep enough dive for you, but you'll appreciate Sheffield's honesty, respect, and awareness of Bowie and his impact on our culture.

I was much later to The Bowie Party than Sheffield was, and found that his work infected me in a much different manner. Still, so very much of what the feelings the author describes seem like my feelings by the end.

Thank-you for suggesting this, Hermano. Thank-you for writing this, Sheffield. Thank-you for everything, David.

By the end it was super nostalgic for me, but it was difficult to get into. It’s VERY clear that the author is a super fan.

A delightful series of essays about Rob Sheffield's relationship with the different iterations of Bowie. In lesser hands, this could have been tedious. However, Sheffield has proven across his other essay collections (as in his magazine work) to be able to entertain the reader with his turns of phrase so much, you really care more about the ride than the destination. On Bowie is peppered with great facts an anecdotes, and a genuine warmth towards its subject. Definitely not to miss if you're a Bowie or a Sheffield fan.
