Made some good points about friendship as a whole but many of the examples seem pretty white-feminist-middle-class-TERFy unfortunately. The author calls this book intersectional but it’s so far from it. :-(

A breezy, easy meditation on female friendship (mainly of the upper-middle-class cishet white girl variety). It was validating to encounter a book dedicated to something that feels obvious and true to my everyday life. That said, the discussion is not terribly rigorous, consisting mostly of anecdotes or personal experience ("I used to look down on other women but now I don't") and very light analysis of TV shows and movies. The book acknowledges that intersectionality is a thing and some gay women exist, but otherwise steers away from race and queerness (even portraying Boston marriages as a purely platonic arrangement). I was particularly disappointed in the sections that showed a deep investment in an essentialist gender binary; it's making me want to read something by a trans writer to cleanse the palate.

“So many times young girls will be like, ‘I’m a guy’s girl.’ And I’m like, ‘No, you’re not. There’s no way a man can understand you like a woman, and you’re a guy’s girl because you’re threatened by other women.”

I highlighted so many parts of this book because it just resonated with me so much and was a nice reminder of how necessary female friendships are. Like the above quote states, a man will never understand a woman like a woman does. That is why a life as a woman with no female friends can be so lonely. I loved all the film and show analysis as well and it gave me a list of movies I want to watch now.

Anyways, great read! Highly recommend! Gave me the warm fuzzies.

The overall message of female friendships are important and should be uplifted was an inspiring message. However, some parts of this book are a little dated, despite only coming out 6 years ago. It's an unfortunate by-product, because I believe without those parts, this book could be stronger and deliver a better message of unity for female friendships.

Not that I needed a reminder why my girlfriends are an important part of my life, but I appreciated the ways this book shows that that’s been true for women around the world forever.

Loved that this book gave me all the friendship feels. The personal anecdotes about friendship were the best part. The disorganized annotations made it a little tough to get through at times. Overall, a good book!
