I enjoyed reading this, but I think I missed out on some context since I don’t know much about Shakespeare or theatre in general. I think if you like Shakespeare and dark academia vibes, you’d love this. Definitely in the same category as a Secret History. Liked the dark academia vibes, good writing,  but I wasn’t super into Oliver as a character. He just seemed a little flat, and I didn’t understand him that well. Despite that, I did have a good time with this book.

Reading this book traps you in a spiral, coiling tighter and tighter until its inevitable end. The tension builds and builds and builds and builds and snaps in the most gloriously messy Shakespearean way. I actually wish I knew more about Shakespeare after reading this book. I feel like I missed references. Not just in the direct quotes, but in the roles the characters play, in the narrative structure, in relationships, in the ending. I suspect this book, as good as it is as a first read, will fare better for me as a reread.

It was alright, some things just kind of came out of nowhere though. Read if you liked the Secret History but want somewhat less problematic characters and not as dark.

This book is like if the breakfast club was made up of a bunch of pretentious (but loveable) Shakespearean theater nerds and also it was a murder mystery. 

Vibes were exquisite, made me want to read shakespeare, loved the characters, plot made sense without being predictable. The pacing was also great, I think this would be a good book to get out of a reading slump. Only reason it’s not 5 stars is bc I’m stingy with 5 stars and it didn’t have a deep personal impact on me lol

The ending

was a bit confusing, but it’s kind of impressive if a book can make me do research on Shakespearean plays after I finish it, right?

“take me to the lakes where all the poets went to die.”

this book hooked me in quickly. i loved the campus setting, the theatre dramatics and just the over all autumn/winter vibes. it’s a great read for those seasons.  

there were moments where i found the characters to be so pretentious. i hated the constant shakespeare quotes being brought into regular conversations. i also thought the characters were over dramatic even for theatre students. 

the buildup was slow but not boring, however, i was really interested in james and oliver’s relationship dynamic and i wish we got to see some queer love scenes or atleast a conversation with the two regarding that. the ending broke my heart completely and im just so sad for oliver and james. 

overall, its a good book, i would give it a higher ranking had i not had shakespeare being shoved down my throat.

Compelling story and characters. I found the writing style a little verbose at times and must admit to skimming the Shakespeare quotes a few times which is the only reason it's been knocked down on review.
