God Oliver...
Could he be any stupider?
The ending is gut wrenching and maddening and the way it was unraveling was brilliant! I never suspected it to end that way.
The character development stupefied me. Well written and well thought out.

This book- This book is honestly one of the best pieces of literature I have consumed in my life. I adored this book, the tension it built so magnificently, the descriptions, the plays. I love how it builds everything up, but everything still goes so fast and smoothly. The layout of ‘Acts’ and ‘Scenes’ made my theatre loving heart cry out! This book needs so much more attention than it already has.

also i’m sorry but James and Oliver’s relationship was SO HEARTWARMING AND CUTE AHHHHHH!

the twist at the end actually made my jaw drop to the floor.

This was so much fun, I was VERY entertained.

I *adored* the plays within the book. They were so immersive in the way that the characters always got lines that mirrored their inner workings and their dynamics with the other characters within the friendgroup, in the way they were visually stunning and even included the audience and in the way they evolved with the character.
(The Romeo and Juliet play as climax of the story, where Olivers, finally acknowledged, infatuation marks a point of no return and the reader just knows it will come down crashing and burning was so cool)

(And I just like Shakespeare, so ig that's also enough of a reason to like it.)
I was so engaged with the characters and their slow descent into guilt and madness and the succumbing to their roles, I almost forgot that we still don't know
who killed Richard.
lol

Characters playing into archetypes as blatantly as they do here can be annoying, even if it's done on purpose. For me it took away some if the relatibility/sympathy for some things characters have done. (Ik you're reacting that way bcs it's what your archetype would do, but it's really throwing me off rn)

This book should not be compared to Donna Tartt's Secret history. People coming here to seek something similar will be disappointed. I think, the similarities are rather superficial.
(2 Richards, pretentious friendgroup, murder)

Loved this book! Similar to The Secret History but I found this book to be more enjoyable to read.

The melodrama. Oh god, the melodrama. This book had at least 10% too many words, most of which were quoted from Shakespeare's myriad plays. It suffers, as they always do, from 'debut novel syndrome,' where the new author is inevitably paired with a new or weak editor who doesn't pare down and tighten up the author's work, leaving the reader to slog through ten words where seven will suffice.

I have *got* to stop reading debut novels.
