It's not ill-spirited, i.e. portrayal is obviously not condonement - but antagonists mention/voice intent on sexual assault, antisemitism, and religious supremism very frequently. The author doesn't take pleasure in the idea of exploring those ideas out of morbid curiosity, as some books might, but they are mentioned and given proper emotional weight and punishment when necessary.

An adventurous romp through plagued France that moves at breakneck speed. Biblical horrors, light gore, and the stink of desperation all coalesce upon the heads of our heroes throughout their journey. I quite enjoyed Between Two Fires and found myself charmed by its cast of characters—the blurring of the lines between malcontents, heroes, and dastardly devils. If you like sprinklings of horror and heart in your medieval fantasy, you’ll enjoy Between Two Fires.
