I struggled with this one. I have read all the previous books and really enjoyed them. This I both read and listened to (on my commute). I wasn't a fan of the narrator, but that is not why I struggled.
The story didn't grab me and I was bored with this one..I struggled.

I do like how the previous books play parts in the most current in the series, but this was not a winner.

I will most certainly try the next in the series and hope I get a winner like the previous ones.

I really must learn to read series books in order. Despite that I really enjoyed this book which starts with the DI under suspension and working in cold crimes and ends with him back in his niche solving both the cold and the current crimes. I like that there is a little more of the character's personal lives and shows a different side to their characters.

Liking Jane's character development! Though 5 books in, you'd think you should know more about the recurring characters. They are rather cute together and glad it's not saccharine at all.

SpoilerWith Nick being suspended and looking at cold cases, I honestly hoped Jane would solve this murder, but Nick steps in halfway (poor Janice). Yes yes, it's a Nick Dixon series, not Jane Winter... But it would have been nice if she was the one who worked out the important bit of the investigation for once.

So interesting that there's different types of insulin available - I had no idea!

SpoilerBig pharmaceuticals "incentivising" use of one drug over another for profit probably happens more often than we think. And murdering people to protect your profit margins? I'm sure it happens... in any industry.

I don't know why but I found the scene where the Albanians ambushes Nick on the beach to be pretty amusing. Though pointing guns at dogs is just low.

I thought this was the last book for some reason, but no! So happy there's two more books!!

Quick easy read, likeable characters, enjoying the series. Dislike the occasional 'gonna'. Seems out of place. Plot is original and interesting info on type 1 diabetes and different kinds of insulin available.

I like the dialogue in much of this book. In particular the banter between Nick and Jane when they’re at home is lovely to listen to, and comes across as ‘real’.

The danger of telling the audience something before the characters figure it out is it’s almost impossible not to end up with some “agh why haven’t they figured X out yet?” frustration. (This is with respect to misleading evidence.) It wasn’t carried out ridiculously far, though, so the frustration is short-lived, thank goodness.

The author’s note at the end of the book indicates that he had a bit of a soapbox going in with respect to an issue (diabetes and the treatment thereof). I thought he handled this extremely well. I never felt like I was being lectured; it always seemed entirely a part of the plot and background. That’s pretty unusual, so I applaud him.

I did have a little trouble toward the end keeping up with some of their leaps of thought with respect to who did what, but I might be a little slow this weekend.

Great read. This was my first of the Dixon series, and it stood alone quite nicely. The characters had depth and I'm looking forward to picking up his other books in this series.

Suspenseful throughout, it had my attention and at times I wanted to jump ahead to find out what would happen. Includes politics, outsiders and twists throughout. I also enjoyed the additional info at the end regarding Diabetes.

If you enjoy John Grisham books or other murder crime novels, you will enjoy Damien Boyd.
