I’m really shocked with this book. I had this on my TBR and I saw several TT videos really hyping this up. So I moved it to the top of my list. I was expecting to love this. The begging started pretty great and I found Zafira a complete bad*ss FMC. However, did anyone else find Nasir low key disappointing? Also I didn’t want Zafira to be with Dean, until I did… and well yeah. After the beginning, the book just started to fall flat for me. I found the middle very boring. I nearly DNFed multiple times, but I kept gaslighting myself. I have been way too busy with school to really give it the time it needs and I figured that was maybe causing my uninterest. Now that I’ve finished, I feel the pacing was very off. Fast then slow for the longest time, then peddle to the floor and then slammed the brakes. At first it felt pretty original, until it didn’t. Just very typical choices that ya fantasy authors make after the beginning. Anyway, part of me is still trying to gaslight myself into reading book 2 😵‍💫

i enjoyed the plot of this story and the setting felt like it’s own well developed character. that said the main characters were often the most tedious part of the story. at times, the pacing could have been better. for large parts of the story, i didn’t feel emotional connection with any of the characters save a few side characters.  the romantic subplot could have been cut entirely and the book would have benefited thereby. that said i was riveted and plan on reading the next book in the series.

Don’t read it if you’re looking for a HUGE romance plot or something, romance is more of a sub-plot here and im sure that in the second book the romance is more prominent, but both books are long af. That’s all the warning I’ll give but apart from that I REALLY LIKED IT, the world building is amazing and the characters development is even better, i genuinely enjoyed it.

I think I’m just reiterating what other reviewers have said but the first 1/4 ish of the book was slow. I had a hard time getting into it. But one I did it didn’t take too long to read.
I enjoyed all the characters throughly and I feel that some criticism of the flatness of supporting characters will change in the second book.
But there were parts where I felt so much was happening I missed something and ended up rereading certain sections. For a first novel though honestly it’s a great story to build off of so I’m really excited to read the second book.

I loved this book so, so much! Especially after the first introduction, I was really invested in the story and the characters alike. The dual POV was also a nice addition, because you get to know the characters and their thoughts more closely.
Now, this is YA and while there is romance, there is no smut. I’m personally not a huge fan of smut, so i didn’t miss anything (more on the contrary, actually), but just fyi!
One of the best parts, besides the story and the world, were the characters, mainly the female characters. I enjoyed having strong female characters that navigated a world that is (partially) misogynistic. Also- there was no “not like other girls” or battles between women, just empowerment without rivalry.
And, another thing- the descriptions of characters appearance felt really sophisticated. Not unrealistic, but also not downputting or anything. And there was a certain fluidity, the FMC having some more “masculine” features like broad shoulders, etc. Refreshing to read and encouraging to read in a YA book!
