The groundwork of something great is there, and hopefully once this debut author finds her footing, the execution will be there too. The thing I disliked the most is that big information reveals felt shoehorned in and rushed. We didn’t really get to sit with them. And sometimes information felt like it didn’t come at the most effective time in the story. Took awhile to get going too but there are fun parts. Our protagonist is intriguing and I’m excited to see where her story goes. I could do without the love triangle. I am also irked that the takeaway was “we need to work with the genocidal colonizers” and that that’s who she’s with for now, but as this is a duology, I’ll reserve judgement on that until the story fully concludes.

I got to like 50% before I DNF’d this book. There was still no clear plot and nothing could happen for me to give this book more than 2/5. There was nothing to set this book apart from others.

I think publishing this under the adult imprint was a disservice to the book. I believe it was originally intended to be YA and that certainly shows. This isn't inherently a bad thing, but when something is billed as adult but reads YA your expectations are set for something different than you get. For example, if the book had been presented as YA the first three chapters having the FMC be 8 years old wouldn't have felt quite so jarring. That being said, it was extremely hard to get into a flashback that was that long for what was billed as an adult book, and then the 9 year jump still makes the character 17. While age of the character doesn't determine if something feels YA or not the overall writing and feel made it come off that way. I think the characters interacted more interpersonally than with their world which to me always ends up having a more YA feel. I don't think the writing was bad or the story wasn't compelling, this just really suffered from mis-marketing or branding.
