Beka leaves Chorus with her new hound to hunt in new places, lots of intrigue and plotting abound. Achoo is truly the best dog too.

So, so, so close.
It lived up to Terrier in plot, characters, surprises, world consistency - I *really* enjoyed it!

But.

Pierce is so great at strong girl characters and I know some readers who really take inspiration from that.
There is a character who is revealed to be a woman in spirit with a usually-assigned-male body. Once the character is revealed, Pierce could have supported her trans-girl readers by using "she/her/hers" and acknowledging that spirit is more important than body. Instead, the character is misgendered throughout the rest of the book and I just weep for those poor girls reading *once again* that they can never be real, can never be accepted, can never be allowed to live in truth *and from an author whom they trusted.*

I am moved to strong language.
Pierce could have *saved lives*.

I like this trio of books. It comes before all the other Tortall books. It's also the only set of the series when you don't know ahead of time when each book will start and end (think page, squire, knight, etc). The cheesiest part is how she ties them to the rest of the series but that doesn't take much of the book so it's all good.

A great sequel. I loved how the characters and storyline developed. And how it really felt like a natural progression from the storyline of the first book and In Bekas career as a dog.

Beka is now in her first year as a Dog, teamed up with her partner Goodwin and her scent hound Achoo, and investigating a counterfeiting crime in a new city.

New, loveable characters are introduced and old, trustworthy ones are brought back. Overall an entertaining time!

I didn’t want to but I ended up really liking Dale. It’s kind of refreshing for a protagonist not to be with a guy at the conclusion of a book but I also think the author did that because she intends for Beka to end up with someone else.

I'd forgotten about the transgender/gay representation in this book (a surprise, to be sure, and not altogether unpleasant) as well as its abundant references to urine and feces. XP

I think the pacing and characters are very well done, and I enjoyed the story in spite of its somewhat crude vocabulary.

UPDATE:
I DO NOT recommend this book or its sequel to any transgender readers! The trans character is consistently and repeatedly misgendered, even after explaining to Beka that she identifies as female. This is never addressed or corrected.
