Not in the mood - it’s probably good, but I’m not looking to this topic/style for the character exploration it seems heavy on

What a beautiful book. A realistic dystopia, a location I've never read about before (the Netherlands), and a diverse cast of characters who just happen to be autistic, trans, Jewish, bi-racial, Muslim, in a wheelchair - and just get on with their lives (well, get on with trying to save their lives). Could not recommend more.

On The Edge Of Gone is not your typical end-of-the-world YA. It's a surprisingly hopeful survival story and a touching exploration of community.
The narrator, Denise, is an autistic, mixed-race Dutch girl, and the story follows her as she comes to terms with the end of the world and tries to find her place in the new one. She's terrified of not being 'useful', but time and time again she proves herself to be far stronger than she gives herself credit for.
It's more of a character study than an action-packed adventure (although there are enough mysteries and heart-stopping moments to keep you hooked), but the whole diverse cast of characters are so wonderfully realised, it never feels lacking. Denise and her friends face some difficult questions of love and morality, and Duyvis isn't afraid to explore the fact that there are no easy answers.
On The Edge of Gone is a thoughtful and heart-stirring standalone YA which is well-worth a read.

I like the different take in the dystopia adventure. The story hovers around being good as the characters struggle more with themselves than the disaster. 87
