I thrill ride that varies in pace but hard to put down, Stephen King does a very convincing job of describing the mind of a retired old school detective, down on his luck, and contemplating suicide.
The villain of this story presents a corrupt and troubled consciousness, and serves a allegory for the racism and intolerance in America.
The author treats us a diverse cast of imperfect characters that are intriguing to learn about throughout the tale.
This ranks up there with some of Stephen Kings best work

Amazing character development, as you would expect from King. A standard gunslinger, Bill Hodges is a character to love; his love for the others is so fast and deep, you can't help it. The big break from the norm in this book is the seeming lack of the supernatural. The villain is disturbing, but pitiable and very, very human. I'm excited to see how the rest of the trilogy unfolds.
