Marcovaldo - A Delightful Collection of Seasonal Tales

Calvino’s Marcovaldo is a charming collection of twenty short stories that follow our hapless protagonist through the four seasons, each tale reading like a modern fable with a gentle touch of whimsy.

Marcovaldo himself is wonderfully reminiscent of Inspector Clouseau - well-intentioned but gloriously inept. Whether he’s accidentally becoming a snowman, mistaking poisonous mushrooms for dinner, or dealing with wasp stings, his bumbling attempts at connecting with nature in an industrial city are both endearing and hilariously misguided.

Calvino’s writing is crisp and economical, perfectly suited to the short story format. Each chapter is just the right length - substantial enough to develop its comedic premise but brief enough to maintain momentum. The seasonal structure gives the collection a pleasing rhythm, and the fable-like quality makes each story feel both timeless and gently profound.
This is the perfect book for readers seeking something light and entertaining. It’s a refreshing palate cleanser that proves short fiction can be every bit as satisfying as longer works. Calvino has definitely earned a spot on my “authors to explore further” list.

Recommended for: Anyone who enjoys gentle humor, short fiction, or stories that find magic in the mundane. Perfect for busy readers who want something meaningful but digestible.

This guy’s problems are so Italian. All of his problems are named Michael-Anthony and they all run a sub shop together.

These short tales of Marcovaldo were so fun and captivating. Calvino is great, as usual.

A fever dream of industry! Surprisingly beautiful writing and funny in bits. Points off for harming an innocent rabbit.
