The armadillo was a nice enough character, but there was something missing. I wanted to love this book, but it was not the hippopotamus . . .
As a follow up to But Not the Hippopotamus, it falls a bit short. The rhyme and rhythm are fun, the armadillo is very cute and I love what he stands for. It just seems like it ends early. My toddler loves it though, so I’ll be spending a lot of time with the armadillo!
I'm going to need to show this one to my husband - he was very distressed by the ending of But Not The Hippopotamus. Now he can be reassured that the Armadillo just didn't want to participate in the race, and wasn't being maliciously kept from it.
The first time I tried to read this my daughter she screamed like a banshee (no idea why -she stopped when we put it away & was fine with the next book we read). Take 2 went smoother but she was not into it at all. While this didn't make me want to scream, it did make me want to yawn. It was not my cup of tea either...
Poetic story of an armadillo. The reader is invited to stroke his nose at the end.
Very cute! I used it in conjunction with my toy armadillo for virtual storytime.
For: armadillo fans; readers looking for a book about taking one's time.
Possible red flags: threat of excitement; does not relate much to the previous But Not the Hippopotamus, which will sadden some fans.
