deeply (lol) dark, moments of hope and optimism are fleeting in a "all we have is each other" sense and the true villain is isolating yourself, refusing to believe or rely on each other, allowing your isolation to lead you to be exploited and further imprisoned

This was a great start to my reading year! Very bloody and violent with interesting characters and a fantastic story.

3.5 stars. A fun dark story set on a prison planet. Bleak and sparse, but in a good way. Fast read, not a whole lot of dialogue, and the artwork is good as well.

Under-Earth has sparse wording; the artwork conveyed most of the story. For a nearly 600-page graphic novel, I had hoped for more. I was intrigued by the underground prison world and found the characters fascinating. I just was left wanting more: more intersection of the two-character pairs’ stories, more detail on Malcolm & Reece’s friendship & the importance of the books, more explanation as to the formation of prison, more about the surveillance-eye-in-the-sky drone, more about the purpose of the mining and the payment system. It is one thing to leave a reader wanting a story to continue. It is another to leave a reader feeling like they never got enough to begin with.

Great graphic novel set in a tremendous prison in an underground cavern. This book has some of the most graphic violence I've seen in a while. The kind of book with multiple scenes where people get the shit kicked out of the to the point where they're spitting dislodged teeth. I do have to admit that I had some difficulty telling the characters apart in the beginning, as they're mostly fucked-up looking dudes in identical prison uniforms.
