an amazing story about grief, family, and academics. anyone who has had other people’s hopes & dreams pushed onto them will love this book.

the first half is a bit repetitive, but when you look through the lens of the family it makes perfect sense. this family is ruminating on the grief and trauma that comes with losing a child. the repetition only helps you empathize and enter their headspace.

throughout this book i found pieces of myself in all of the siblings and fell in love with celeste’s writing style and flow. i would’ve loved a biiittt more closure/drama at the end but this book literally got me out of a reading slump so i’d call that a win!!!!!

This was an absolutely beautiful book about loss, family dynamics, parental expectations, racism, sexism, and lost sense of identity. The characters and their relationships with each other were written so authentically - at times you loved and hated each of them. Each person’s relationship with themselves and other members of their family was so fleshed out and the writing had me underlining constantly. This book will make you think about your relationship with your parents, with your siblings, with yourself. I felt so much grief through this book in ways that I have never personally experienced and it taught me a lot about finding my sense of self amidst the expectations I may feel from others. My only gripe is that the writing at times was too on the nose with the messages being conveyed, but that still didn’t dim my experience reading this book. Overall, this was a beautifully crafted book from start to finish and definitely one of the best I have read so far this year.

Second time reading this and I forgot how much I loved it. I feel such sadness for the characters as they grieve and long for things they will never have, and feel close to them as they make mistakes and eventually try to learn from them and forgive one another.
