This book felt like the world's longest prologue or just a terribly long chapter.
Cori Monroe is a normal human in a world where 30-70% of people are mages of different ranks from hedgemage to Merlin depending on the strength of their magic. Cori is estranged from her family because happened to be there when her twin brother died. Now her parents won't speak to her or allow her to speak to her little brother. She works constantly while going to school to become an EMT. Her best friend, Jo-Jo, and her family take care of Cori. It's a great world, but I don't feel like half the story moved the story forward. You know Cori has magic she has never realized because everything shorts out around her and every time she's upset disasters happen. Literally every person in her life tells her she should get tested to see if she's a mage, but she refuses. There is even a customer at the coffee shop the seems to prophesy everything he sees her, telling her she's a mage. But 333 pages and she never gets it. She just serves coffee, goes to school, goes to Jo-Jo's house, etc. Every chapter is the same and after a while I just got anxious for anything to happen.
The author says this is a long series. It would have to be when in 333 pages she hasn't even made progress. Ugh! Will not be reading any farther.
On a side note, the audio narrator was just bad. The word "practicum" was pronounced "prak-tee-um" every time, she said "nu-cu-lar" instead of "nu-clear" and Richter was pronounced "rich-ter" instead of "rik-ter." I will be avoiding books narrated by this gal from now on.

My luck was a good read for me. I felt really angry about her parents and somewhat annoyed that Cori wouldn't consider taking the test.
Nice start to a series
Fun world, interesting protagonist. Nice change to have an aro/ace (probably) protagonist. :) While she was clearly willfully obtuse about some things, I could see why, so it was less frustrating than usual. Great fun read...didn't want to put it down!

Just a really bad book about a girl finding dead people, and has a lot of dandruff...
Did not finish, and do not recommend in any version.

If you pick this book because you think it's going to be a cute, easy, fun read, you would be mistaken.
it is not. while I liked the world the story is set in, and I liked the characters, the story itself was
pretty dry, it almost read like a text book which is a bit boring. I haven't decided if I am going to read book 2 yet or not.

There are 4 Goodreads users I follow who rated this book highly so I went through the entire book waiting for it to improve. I'm really confused.
