Loved. My ONLY complaint was all the French! Reading on my phone I had Google Translate open the whole time.

I flew through this book. And after enduring a ridiculous book hangover from finishing Migrations last week, that’s saying a lot. I loved it... but it was extremely pretentious. And not very feminist. Kristin Hannah blurbed the front cover and I couldn’t help but think, if only she had written this story. If she had, it would have been 10/10 for me. I also felt like the ending was a bit too indulgent and unnecessary.

And for a parent who is watching Moana nearly all the time, it killed me. So many scenes where lines from the movie popped into my head.

I just don't know how to feel about this one. There are so many loose ends that I need fixing. I've read so many great reviews that I keep thinking... did I read a different book?!?!

What I can say is this... I didn't love the beginning. It took me a little longer (until part 2) to really understand the format and writing style that Huckelbridge was using. Once I got used to it, I was able to read in awe of his literary capabilities. However, I never fully loved the story. I loved Barry and Sophie as partners, but her use of French was highly distracting. I tried to just glance at it and move on, because my high school Spanish classes were no help to me there, but I kept feeling like I was missing part of the story.

In the end, I got teary at the events that happened, but I felt completely robbed of a real ending. And I still have so many questions! After all of the hype, this ended up being a bummer for me, but I am a minority here!

Like most of the reviews I just skimmed, I don't know where to start. This book made me laugh, made me cry, was predictable at times, and then broke my heart. It has so much humor and eloquence that you don't care about the fact that part of it is predictable. This is one of those books I'll be pondering for some time..

One thing I did not love: the random French words/sentences. I understand that it was necessary to understand them in order to infer the tone, but I felt it was unnecessary when full sentences were involved.

Really liked the narrator's "voice" and the layout of the book. Read it without reading the description so I didn't know what to expect.

Somehow, Castle of Water pulls off a realistic view of learning to love again on a desert island. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and by the end, all my questions were answered. This book had me listening to Jacques Brel’s music and looking at Gauguin’s art.
