This book was bought for me, when I was born and was brought up on the fables! I do really love this book! It’s timeless! 5/5

Caldecott winner 1981. The pictures deserve this award. There are 20 fables here, in a very consistent story/picture on side-by-side pages. The fables all have their message at the bottom. These are not as worthy as Aesop's Fables, but great values you'd like kids to grow up learning.

Arnold Lobel’s Fables are a collection of unique fables each with animals as the main characters. From misbehaving kangaroos to an adventure-seeking lobster to a trickster crow, each short tale teaches the reader a wise lesson. Children and parents alike will love these short and fun fables.

Arnold Lobel has written his own fables, one page stories, in this collection. There is a lesson in each one and the lessons are written at the bottom of the page for each story. This is a long book that is a lot to read in one setting, but better spread over a few nights.

The artwork is lovely and focuses on the heart of the story. I enjoyed many of these.

The kids thought some of these were funny and some of the stories were boring. The nephew loved the pelican who is a mess at dinner. My nephew is so messy. He was the messiest eater as a child. He still can make a mess, but he is better now. I don't think he got the point of the story. No one would invite the pelican over because he was so messy. I think the nephew missed that important point. There were several stories he liked in here. 3 frogs were eaten and he loved that. This was a 4 star book for him.

The niece enjoyed the story about a Rhinoceros out shopping for a new dress. She is all gussied up and looks silly. The lesson at the bottom says:’Nothing is harder to resist than a bit of flattery.’ She understood the story and she thought it was funny too. She gave this collection 3 stars.

I absolutely love Lobel's illustrations, but I'm just not a fan of fables in general.

These original animal fables are still as wonderful as I remember them; with short morals at the end, and attractive illustrations.

Fables by Arnold Lobel was originally published in 1980, in 1981 it won the Caldecott medal for illustration. Its intended audience is children four to eight years old. The book contains twenty fables and twenty illustrations to go with them. I really enjoyed this collection of fables because it included a variety of fables, some that felt more classic and like fables I grew up reading, like “The Ducks and the Fox”, and some that are very imaginative and different like, “The Crocodile in the Bedroom” and “The Bad Kangaroo”. I think this collection does a really good job of having a mix of fables that are silly and engaging while also having ones with more applicable morals. Additionally, the illustrations are all really beautiful and are really good at conveying the tone of each story, whether they’re silly or heartfelt. I really like how even though all the illustrations are the same format throughout the book, Lobel does a really good job of sometimes allowing the illustrations to break the frame so that each composition still feels fresh and engaging even though they’re all the same dimension and format throughout the book. I would highly recommend this collection of fables to any child.
