FIVE GOD DAMN STARS!!

This is one of those rare books that had me laughing, crying, screaming and cheering for more.

The way this book is narrated, the adventure, the characters. Everything about this book is phenomenal. Amina is a mother who struggles with her Muslim faith, wanting to be a good mother but also go out on adventures with her crew. She’s strong, fights for what she wants, unabashedly in her sexuality as an older woman and is a badass.

I also love the crew! Dalilah was absolutely amazing. Every single character was written well and just fantastic. I NEED MORE PIRATES!!

Thrilling and vivid, adventurous, even whimsical, at times. The sea air and desert air and magical places between worlds; Amina and her friends have heart and depth, and stories of their own to fall into. About books, and ancient scrolls, scary, Frankish sorcerers, gods, sassy mythical creatures, and unhelpful but handsome demons. Recommended for anyone who loves a good adventure.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was an incredibly exciting and action filled book. I haven't been reading as much this year so I rushed to finish this before the archive date. As a result, there are still some parts of the book I have to come back to in order to call it fully finished. However, I did overall really enjoy this! I think if I'd read it at a more reasonable pace I probably would have enjoyed it slightly more but overall I really enjoyed the characters, the storyline, and the potential for more stories in this world. I also really loved the minor plot twist at the very end I found that to be really fun :)
I was personally not expecting anywhere near the amount of fantasy that ended up being in this book as I originally thought it was mostly just a pirate book, but I wasn't mad about discovering that just not what I originally expected.
Overall would definitely recommend! 4.5 stars

I enjoyed this adventure a lot! I loved having an older and more experienced fantasy protagonist, I loved the diverse cast of characters, and I had fun being immersed in cultures and locations that aren't as familiar to me as typical fantasy settings. I think this book delivered solidly on its premise and my expectations were definitely met. I am not sure why, but despite all that, I had a slow time reading this. I found myself having to force a little to pick it up, and it wasn't until I felt like I was nearing the end that I began to read with more momentum. I am not sure why this was, since the book is fairly action packed throughout. It may be that I got lost a little in the unfamiliar terms and creatures? I'm not sure. This is more of a personal issue that I have with some romance books as well, but I found
Amina's horniness and ogling of the males around her to be off-putting. I was mildly disgusted that she had sex with her "demon" husband again towards the end of the book after everything we know he has done.

I was so lucky to have received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley!

Somewhere in this book something was described as a nautical mystery and I found that to be very on point for this book. Although I might replace the word mystery with adventure. The world building and characters were so rich, the twists and turns so exciting, the character relationships so well thought out, I enjoyed the danger, the emotional connection, and the magical elements. This book took pirates and made them even better! What a wild ride! I really enjoyed this read, as always, because Shannon is a freaking gem, and an amazing storyteller. I’ve loved everything she has written and she is an auto but author for me.

A foul-mouthed, middle-aged legendary pirate captain comes out of her retirement for one last perilous sea voyage to save a deceased friend’s daughter and potentially cement her family’s future, and ends up on quest to defeat a power-hungry murderous villain. I loved every second of this (I will read anything S. A. Chakraborty writes). Amina is a fantastic narrator with a sarcastic sense of humor, the mouth of a sailor (fitting), and complexity that makes her so interesting. She’s far from perfect (she accidentally married a demon), but she’s a badass mother who’d been told there was only one sort of respectful life for a woman, and she resoundly said fuck that. Amina’s friends and crew mates are also wonderfully grumbly and loyal, and along with the top tier prose and world building, this book exceeded my expectations. If you love a band of misfits, a useless ship cat, sweeping adventure with a hint of the fantastical, and a whole lot of found family - this is for you.

I ADORED this pirate tale. This was such a fun book and I really really enjoyed the characters, plot, and storytelling. It was way funnier than I expected to be, and I’m excited for the sequel to come out!
