I really liked this book a lot! It was incredibly adventurous, the pirate backdrop is incredibly exciting and a fun setting. I loved the protagonist. I feel like she was written very well. Strong and stubborn, but not in a way that feels overdone at all.

There are so many cute characters. I would definitely love if we got closer to the characters as I typically very easily and strongly bond with them, but I still really enjoyed the little family that was made from the core characters. They still grew and got to be vulnerable and show their love for each other throughout and it’s just lovely. The bits of eccentric personalities in many characters are very fun, and I hope to see them more. I love how diverse they are, culturally, personality-wise, etc.

I would say I overall enjoyed the pacing of this book. It definitely wasn’t slow, but it wasn’t running at the speed of light either. I think near the very end (like last 50 pages or so), I would have enjoyed it being slowed down slightly more, but that’s not to say it was a rushed ending by any means. Things were still wrapped up neatly and there’s room to expand the series if she chooses to! (Fingers crossed!)

Finally, I love the very subtle LGBTQ+ representation in this book. I think it’s so refreshing to see these treated not as a major plot point, conflict, or drama, but simply letting the reader know a little more about the characters and let it be normalized. Of course I love stories centered around queerness, but it feels great to just let it be included without special fanfare. For one character specifically (no spoilers) I absolutely loved the small reveal and just how perfectly it tied into the story without stealing any spotlight. Nothing is forced about it, nothing feels trope-y or stereotypical. It’s just people being people and I love that.

This book is great and I highly suggest reading it! I found it because I had read R.F. Kuang’s releases and saw she had reviewed this on the cover, and I’m so happy to have picked it up.

This was filled with adventure, leaving no room for a dull moment.  The cover of this book fit the vibe so well.

I had a lot of fun reading this, even if high fantasy isn’t typically my genre; this was so lovely.  The attention to details, the world building, and of course, the plot were all so entertaining.

I really enjoyed how the author wrote adult characters who seemed realistic.  Like the main character dealing with chronic pain for example, being a single parent and worrying about her daughter’s wellbeing, and having a past that left her untrusting of most people.

I adored this book! I just couldn’t stop reading it. The narration was hilarious and I really enjoyed when the scribe and the narrator had little spats; the audiobook handled it really well and added to those moments. This historical fantasy pirate story has everything you could want. I loved Amina’s character and how the story focused on a retired smuggler who was now middle aged and on a “last” quest. She had depth and complexity and was very relatable. I’m so excited to read the future books in the series!

First book to help me get out of my major reading slump. I think it’s so fun and I’m excited for the next books in the series. A lot of folks seem to dislike the last quarter of the book, but I really enjoyed it. If you’re looking for pure piracy, the ending might be a bit disappointing, but if you’re interested in
quests and divine intervention
, I think you’ll find the ending quite satisfying.
I do think the prose and framing narrative could use some work, and this book focuses more heavily on plot than character development, but I thought it was a fun read.

A little long, and the villain is very obvious, almost cartoonishly villainous. But none of that stopped me from enjoying the story. It's an exciting pirate adventure set in an alternate universe from ours, where the history is slightly different, and magic does exist. I got attached to the main crew fast, and by the latter half of the book, I could not put it down, I just had to finish it in that sitting and know what happens to them.

I'm really glad I read this book, even if I didn't give it the highest rating. It was wonderfully written and unique in so many ways -  I just felt.. empty when I'd finished reading, the characters weren't well fleshed out as their relationships & dynamics felt forced + I had no emotional attachment to any character, so in tense moments I was unable to immerse myself in their world. However, the world building was excellent - I loved learning about the different creatures, items, magic 'systems', islands, rituals and more. The pacing was also enjoyable. :) As I mentioned, despite it's flaws I'm very glad I've read this book!
I would've loved to learn more about the Mistress of Poisons, I need to hear more about her part in the adventures.
