What is that ending!! I am speechless. I got goosebumps. For all the books I’ve read, that cliffhanger was probably one of the top ten unexpected plot twist!!
she is the princess and the daughter of the rebel Tilda!!!

It was a slow start for me and while I liked Kiva’s character, I wasn’t immediately engaged. I kept hearing that the plot twist was the best part. I think that was the biggest reason why I I kept reading at a steady pace and this was a Reading Society book club read for March. I will admit, by the end I thought it’d end as a typical YA fantasy HEA but the plot twist completely turned it into an unexpected but much more interesting character arc for Kiva. I’ve already started the second book!

PLOT TWIST!!
No (unmarked) spoilers, but I almost can’t believe I didn’t see some of the stuff in this book coming. The beginning hooked me so well that I could barely put it down; the characters and world are easy to get invested in quickly. The middle got a little slow for my taste for a while there, but it picked back up toward the end and then shocked me so much that I put the book down and stared at the ceiling for a little while. The plot twists and some of the world-building stuff made me feel a way that I haven’t since the 2010s dystopia days, which I loved.
I do agree with some people about the ending- the plot twist was so insane because it felt very out of character and not entirely true to the rest of the story. It was a masterful build up in some ways, and you could see certain pieces fall into place, but I think even some tiny, internal hints that she had a more personal connection to Tilda/the rebels would have helped. It still would have been a complete shock, but without seeming quite as out of left field.

Overall, such a fun read!! Had to rush out to buy the next two, cannot wait to find out where this is going. I just know it’s going to hurt 😁

Considering I know mostly read NA fantasy, this was the first YA fantasy I’ve read in months that I’ve devoured and absolutely loved. Challenging and really realistic themes from real history at times in the book reminiscent of WW2 labour camps. But over and above that, the characters and their personalities, the world building and the twists & turns were fantastic! I half predicted things but not in the way I thought, so I am super excited for the 2nd book!

An incredible book, with a sad but beautiful plot, with twist and turns always around the corner and jumping up at you when you never expected them or knew you needed them but just working so perfectly together that you cant help but love the book to bits.

This story never seemed to fully pull me in. It was good enough, and certainly an interesting premise, but I never felt drawn to continuing. The twist at the end also felt very out of character

I rlly liked this, especially the second half. Idk why it took me a while to get into it (probably bc I wasn’t fully paying attention to the audiobook), but once the second trial came around I was hooked.
I really appreciated how information was revealed to us along w the FMC. The puzzle pieces were revealed in a satisfying way imo. And I loved the characters n can’t wait to see more of them in the next books.
I thought the action was well done, n the introduction to the magic was intriguing, so I am excited to learn more about it :))

I was recommended this book by a friend and I really enjoyed it. It’s a classic struggle against injustice set up but there are so many layers of magic, love and friendship, and turmoil within the fantasy setting. I read it very quickly and look forward to the rest of the series.

This book had a slow start for me, but once I had my bearings and immersed myself in the world I loved it! I was a big fan of The Hunger Games books when they came out and reading (or rather, listening to) this reminded me of the feeling I had while reading those. It’s hard to describe but I almost felt as though Kiva was keeping the reader at arms length throughout the story, which is fitting for her character as she tends to be closed off to others. This was really well written as it was intriguing rather than off-putting.

Noni did a brilliant job of creating likeable, multi-dimensional supporting characters and I really enjoyed watching them develop their relationships with each other as well as with Kiva. There were some big reveals at the end which provided some momentum going into the second book, which I’d thankfully already lined up and have already started! I’m looking forward to seeing what direction the series heads in.
