Boom Comics’ versions of DC and Marvel’s big hitters (Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Rorschach etc) are locked in a prison and forced to battle to the DEATH! (And unlike similar stories done by Marvel the deaths will be permanent).

This initial volume sets out some of the characters and bumps many of the supporting characters off early. It’s all very mysterious and sets up a lot of questions (none of which are satisfactorily answered in volume 3, but for now this is a cool premise.)

The premise/concept of this book is nothing new to me (thanks manga!), but I like what Jenkins and Magno bringing to the table. Imagine the Avengers from Marvel trapped in Arcade's world mixed with Battle Royale/Btoom! and you get superhumans pitted against each other not knowing what or who is behind this. Unlike the big two pub, the characters (hopefully) stayed dead. Jenkins writing is superb and backed by the nice lines of Carlos Magno which reminds me of Moebius or something similar to the French artist. The ending gives way to volume 2 and was a good cliffhanger. I just hope the next volume does not disappoint.
