A romp through mythology

I really enjoyed this one. We follow Ali as she tries to free her dark elf brethren from their underground prison of caves in a post-Ragnarok world full of magical beings and monsters. From the minute she breaks into a bank vault it is non-stop action as she and a new ally travel through the world's of Ydgrassil to find a way to free him of his curse and her people of their entrapment.
There is a light sizzle of romance here but more of an emphasis on world building and adventure. I liked reading Crawford's take on the mythology I am somewhat familiar with and which isn't all that common in today's fiction. Plus, their description of scenarios is intriguing an detailed without being a drag on the storyline.
Highly recommend!

Great read

A great read, a page turner with interesting twists and turns. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

This book was ok, a flat 3 stars. The use of Norse mythology kept me interested. I've never read any post Ragnarok based fantasies before so this was all pretty fresh for me. As for characters, Marroc and Ali feel pretty generic and a little empty. Just your typical ancient dude mated to a younger, more naive character. Luckily Marroc not being able to talk for most of this book and being a complete mystery to Ali worked in the authors favor. Here's to hoping they are more fleshed out in the next book.

Oh, how I enjoyed this book!

Worldbuilding was great! Well okay, I'm biased cause I love Norse Mythology, but still! We don't really have a lot of setting the stage in this instalment, we know the parts of what is important to us right at the start (bad High Elves!!!) and we learn more about the world(s) as we go. All scenes and environments were clear and described in detail without overdoing it.

Character development was really good. Ali is a kickass assassin and thief who will do everything to set her people free from the terrible caves they are forced to live in. Marroc is a lich who consumes blood and souls for power, but he wants his soul back and Ali is his ticket to that if only he can resist this primal need.
While there is a great deal of distrust and subterfuge going on, Ali and Marroc are again and again drawn to each other. I liked how the author wrote them, they felt real and believable. We have met a few other races and characters, though at this point it isn't sure if or when we will see them again.

Pacing and flow were good, there weren't any parts that dragged on, nor were there parts that felt rushed. Some parts, especially Vanaheim, I wished we could have explored a bit more... but certain circumstances busted that idea, maybe in another instalment *fingers crossed*.

The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I loved it! Such an easy and enjoyable read. Oh, and the music references KILLED IT!!! Hahaha, it was absolutely hilarious!! :D
