- “you’re killing people?”
- “no, I’m killing boys!”

absolutely could not put this down.

I love the art in this manga so much, I think it’s my favorite now. for some reason I’ve never actually read any horror manga (weird considering how horror is one of my fave genres) and this was a great introduction. NEED to get my hands on the rest of ito’s work!!

I have a lot to think about with this collection of stories, I can’t really articulate everything right now -  but damn, I loved it. the creativity is incredible. tomie is really awful but I just feel so sympathetic towards her at the same time.

deffffinitely will reread this. and I need to get a physical copy immediately so I can admire the artwork as intended 🩸

faves in no particular order:

- painter
- waterfall basin
- hair
- basement

Interesting to see Ito's artistic abilities progress from the rough and shaky art of the first couple chapters to the smooth and controlled style he eventually develops. I read this over far too long a stretch of time to really analyze it but there's a lot of fascinating food for thought here. Tomie is both predator and victim - this could be interpreted as suggesting that women deserve the violence men inflict on them, but I don't think that's Ito's intent. But it is really interesting as a study of all the men this demonic woman brings out the worst in. I was expecting the entire book to be a series of one-shot stories and was pleasantly surprised that the early stories build upon each other, but then that continuity is abandoned midway through for a series of one-shots before a final three-part story at the end. So narratively it's a bit all over the place, and I hold that against it a bit. The one shots are interesting and move into placing Tomie in wildly different scenarios and exploring the physical properties of her abilities - the one where she gets pulped and turned into sake is a highlight.

One of the interesting things that comes up thematically is the gendered stakes involved in interactions with the opposite sex. That Margaret Atwood quote about men being afraid women will laugh at them and women being afraid men will kill them comes to mind, especially with regards to the three part story at the end. Perhaps the thematic waters are muddied a bit by Tomie's implied culpability in destroying the model's beauty, but whether or not she is responsible for his disfigurement, his actions are essentially fueled by her rejection and derision of him, leading him to torture and murder her.

Really interesting deep analysis of the themes here: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/b91e468b1d464cb2bf6d6d47db8231f5

I am a big fan of Junji Ito and his artwork, this book was similar in formating to his other books; all of the different chapters didn't exactly flow together, but they were all connected. Usually, I would not like this style, but I appreciate how Junji Ito pulls it off.

I loved this manga, but I was genuinely not prepared for how disturbing and creepy it was. Im an avid horror reader and this was a whole new level of disturbing in a good way (ish). I dont think I'll be recommending this just purely cause of how disturbing it was even though I throughly enjoyed it, and it gave a fresh take on horror. The characters (espically Tomie) are not meant to be likable and I appreciate that. Sometimes you feel bad about the abuse and violence Tomie goes through, but you are quickly reminded of what a manipulative and entitled bitch she is (espically in Boy that was badddddddd) and quickly recind anything pitiful you had to say about her. (Possible spoiler idk)
The creepiest thing (and simultaneously the best) is Tomie never dies out. She regenerates and multiplies and is an immortal succubus so you always know that Tomie's regin of horror will continue forever. Even with the ending, just think back to Waterfall Basin and you'll remember you can never get rid of Tomie.
All in all, I think Tomie is am excellent Manga and great for lovers of extreme horror and graphic themes, just would only recommend to much older fans (17+) and that checking the trigger warning for this book will be your best friend (Im serious please check the trigger warnings cause oh boy was this manga a lot). Have a lovely day and Blessed be <3.
