I think this is my favorite Margaret Wise Brown/ Golden book? Never read it growing up, or in library school (... I kind of hate GoodNight Moon & unfairly steered clear of anything else by her) but was gifted TWO copies of this for my kids.
Nice rhyme scheme, goes over colors which Matthew was super into naming at first. Like the slightly trippy ending. Can see why this has been around so long.

One of my favorite books as a child. Have my original copy.

Wát een schattig boekje! Heerlijk op rijm, met geweldige illustraties. Zeker leuk als je van ouderwetse dingen houdt, of gewoon van katten, of gewoon van prentenboekjes!

Interestingly enough, I have several different editions of this book, including golden book anthologies etc. One of them I found at a used bookstore. A mid-century encyclopedia of sorts. It actually had an EXTRA PAGE in the book, not included in any other editions I have ever seen. I think the subsequent edit was wise, the shortened (and the one that most people have read) is far superior to the one with the extra page. However I found it fascinating, nonetheless.

This book is brilliant. Apparently disguised as a cute children's story about kittens and their play with paint, there is a depth to this tale (myth, even?) that hints at the playful, colorful, feline origins of the world itself.
