This is the first book by Pelecanos that I've read and it's easy to see why he's been called the Poet Laureate of DC crime fiction.
It is a prequel to his Derek Strange (black DC police) books and covers the period centering on the assassination of Dr. King in Memphis in April of 1968.
Hard to put down; even harder to resist searching out more books by this author.
