An absolutely beautiful book. It patiently moves across time and narrators, the author writes about themes of displacement and family with stunning nuance. It is not a best-seller style page turner, but rather a story to read if you’re ready to appreciate each carefully written sentence and absorb the thoughtfulness of the author, and you will then be pulled in and have a hard time putting it down.

i understand when people say that this book is for a particular audience…that’s okay, i will claim it for myself! the book is achingly beautiful and i could find a little bit of myself in every page.

an enjoyable read that helped me learn more about the occupation of Tibet. written across two generations, I struggled to connect with parts of the narrative and I don’t see this leaving much of a lasting impact on me, but I enjoyed it while reading.
