I wanted this to be a good mystery book, but I simply could not get into or enjoy the writing style. Could not finish.
The characters were pretty stereotypical (the Columbo-style frumpy British detective, the art professor with disdain for his students, the svelte French art expert, the obese French detective who cared more about the details of food and wine than art...). Also felt like there may have been loose ends (what happened to that fact French guy, after all?). The art history details were interesting.
A rather light read about art forgery and art theft.
A famous painting is stolen from a church and the experts are called in.
Things get more dramatic as another painting is stolen from a woman’s home and a third painting is stolen from a museum.
This book features a lot of interesting characters. There are multiple art experts and I found myself learning plenty about famous paintings and symbolism in art.
I wish I could think of more to say other than, I’d recommend it.

When will I learn? If a book is crap, set it aside. You do not have to finish it all the way to its crappy stupid nonsensical annoying end. I could spend an hour telling exactly why this book is crap, but I have already given it too much of my time. Trust me. Rubbish.
I didn't find this exciting in any way. For a book about an art theft, it was pretty boring. There was a lot of talking and way too many characters to keep track of who's who. It's never a good sign when, near the end of the book, the villains sit around and discuss their entire plan. I've read several non-fiction books about art theft that are way more exciting and intriguing than this one.

This book was just “fine.” I agree with some of the other reviewers who say Charney needs to streamline, but I’d say it was a solid first effort. There were a few too many twists and turns for this to really work, but nevertheless, an engaging read.
this book is not going to make you smarter or change your view of the world. it is entertaining in a way you won't find resentful later. as i said in my review on literature life, this book is much better than the da vinci code. it is good old-fashioned art theft fun. if you liked the thomas crown affair, you will probably enjoy this. the push that got it from three to four stars was that it was too fun to put down. good one to keep you happy on a plane or anywhere else you'd have to wait for a long time.
The information about art theft is compelling, the writing maddening. Avoid it unless you're doing research (which I am).
