The fact that this is narrated by Greek Gods is such a unique and beautiful quality of this book. It adds a charm to the story like nothing I've read before. It's so clever of Julie Berry to make the love scenes narrated by Aphrodite, the war scenes by Ares, the death scenes by Hades, etc. I loved the dual romance, the friendships, the short chapters, the witty banter among the gods, and the fact that the history part of it being historical fiction didn't feel like recycled material. I need more books like this one in my life. I was never a historical fiction gal until Lovely War. Julie Berry produces beautiful writing, and I'm making it my mission to read all her books.

My rating would be 5, but... I'm a Christian, and I love mythology, but in this book, they assume that every time a character prays to "God"--capital g-- they're automatically assumed to be praying to whatever god is around, Apollo, Aphrodite, etc. That was my only issue.

Unpopular opinion to follow....I really did not like the main love story of Hazel and James this book wove within the historical portions of the war. The characters were flat and the instant love wasn’t for me. I also think I would have liked the book better without the use of the Greek gods telling the story and leading the narrative. I felt that all they added were extra chapters and honestly didn’t understand their point within the story. I really liked and connected with Aubrey and Colette and was interested in their lives, their love story, and their roles in the war. I was cheering for them and could have read an entire book about them. I felt like the story of Hazel and James didn’t add anything to this book, other than introducing us to Aubrey and Colette, and would have liked the book much better with them as secondary characters as apposed to the main characters.

Prior to reading this book, I did not know much about WWI. As I was reading I did go and research this war extensively. The best part of the reading this book, for me, was the appendix and the referenced books the author spoke of. I have added many of these books to my “want to read” list. I am glad to have read this book because of the historical portions and the additional reading it has lead me to I just wish the characters had been more fleshed out.

This has to be one of my new favourite book. I really enjoyed following all the characters. The writing and moments between the characters were so raw and tender. I cried from the get go and I think everyone should read this.
