Two love stories told by the Greek goddess Aphrodite against the backdrop of World War I as she is put on trial by her husband Hephaestus. Also Ares, Apollo and  Hades show up. I realize that plot description sounds bananas but this book works. It works very well. I listened to the audiobook which have a full cast which only elevated the story. I’m not sure why more people don’t talk about this one but I know I’m going to add it to my recommendation list moving forward.

I LOVED THIS SO MUCH.

I’ll be maintaining for the rest of my life that Julie Berry wrote this book for me. Combining historical fiction, Greek mythology, and romance has got to be one of the most ingenious book ideas I have ever heard of. AND SHE PULLED IT OFF FLAWLESSLY. Truly, I was addicted from page 1 to the very end. I was so sad when it was all over. I want to take each character with me. The LOVE in this book was so pure and precious and profound. I don’t know what else compares at this point.

Also, I’m surprised this is YA? I never would have thought it was if not for the mortal main characters being teenagers. Nothing against YA—as I adore so many YA books—but I was a little shook. That being said, this is my new favorite YA. Just perfect.

This was a good book, with an interesting concept. I think the concept was better than the execution though. I loved the commentary on being black in America and in war - had not expected that. The characters were predictable and so were the story, which was not necessarily a bad thing, but I feel like the story could have been more tragic and realistic.
