I'm having trouble WANTING to finish this book. The writing is abrupt. Each line reads as if it wants to be a poem, but at the same time, there is no flow. I'm unsure of the point of this story-the plot. I have yet to figure it out. Normally I stick with a book to the end. I can count on one hand the number of books I stopped reading. But I have to end my relationship with this. Maybe some day in the future I'll try again. But there's just too many other books I know I'll enjoy to waste any more time with this one. At least it was a Kindle First Book and I didn't waste money on it.

I read this book to fulfill the goal read a story within a story. this book was amazing. it was like a poem. a waterfall of words. the story line is better felt than read. once you realize there are two stories going on. one when she is awake and one when she is asleep it becomes clearer. this book touched my emotions on so many levels. it felt like a long soak, the earth right after a rain shower, and birthday cake all in one. it made no sense but it spoke to me. i loved it.

I had no idea what magical realism might be, but it sounded so absolutely compelling that I was disheartened to find only ancestral nostalgia. Guess I should stick with it and see where it leads, but if an author bores me in the first chapter...she better get all fuckin' Jules Verne on this mf - with volcanoes, hot air balloons, monsters and crap - or I'm outtie.
