It’s frustrating to read a book that has so many good ideas but misses the finish line. The author tells us not to settle for reforms, but then implies that reparations and prison abolition will be enough to free us. The truth is that we need to take the state from the ruling class, destroy it, and then fashion our own. This is necessary in order to protect a world that we the people will create. This is the way to freedom. This is the way to real democracy, to real peace.

"Yes, a world without prisons and police seems impossible. But so did ending slavery, accessing the vote, or ensuring marriage equality. Yet we have managed to achieve all of those things. When the people apply enough pressure, the state will bend."
This is the second book by Hill that I have read and it was equally as incredible. I will read anything by this man.
I realized only at the very end by reading his bio on the last page that Hill is a professor at my Alma mater!! I'm kicking myself for never having met him or taken a class with him.
Incredible book. Easily digestible but also extremely packed with facts and stats on police brutality, covid numbers and the goings on of the last 10 months.
I only wish to read Hill's take on the events of January 6th. Though I'm sure he's busy writing about it now! I'm keeping my eyes peeled for his next book for sure.
