There were so many things that were wrong in this book, like the family dynamics, the marriage, that the fmc incriminates herself with that diary, etc...
But I was mainly her for the vibes and the book delivered on that department.

well… I don’t know…
the Summer & Whit in the last 20% of this book I can get behind and root for but the first 80%.. it’s a no for me strictly for his little nickname and how she let him treat her. now the family drama in this book, I ate that shit up. this had very much gossip girl and the royal family vibes.
now I did feel for Summer because she felt like she deserved how Whit treated her in the beginning because of all the shit that happened with her mother & his father. she also had major issues from what happened with Yates 🤢. her own mother couldn’t even protect her and when she did she let Summer believe a lie and not tell her what really happened until it got to much for her to handle.
Summer’s mother didn’t hold a candle to Whit’s mother, Sylvia Lancaster, my god this woman as horrid. I honestly thought that Whit was going to take her side to at Thanksgiving especially since she had Sylvie on her side. Thanksgiving is when I started changing my opinion on Whit because he finally realized his feelings, even if it was a little late.
now, did this book need to be as long as it was, absolutely not. we time jumped alot and I felt like we could have shortened a lot of the beginning while they were in high school but 🤷🏻♀️.

Monica Murphy has this unique ability to create shockingly dynamic characters. These character, I simply cannot stand in the beginning but by the end of the book I find myself agreeing with. An enormous amount of growth is spectacularly shown throughout the story, as the characters age, they read different on the page which is not an easily achieved feat.
Whit and Summer meet when they’re fourteen years old. In that moment, a story of scandal, shame and degradation starts and will cover years. Their parents are protagonists in scandalous cheating, and Summer’s mother is involved in shame and public derogation as a home wrecker. Obviously, Monica Murphy brought froth all the possible darkness and had a blast. There is kink, erotica, bullying, blackmail, cheating, all in one dirty and darkly fascinating tale of the rich and depraved!
Even though this story is dark and erotic, to me it was also tragic. Two young adults, just staring out to live, when they should be full of promise and ideals, they are instead jaded and disillusioned. Their parents are an example of cheating and hypocrisy, their goals are to improve on their status by making loveless unions, and their future involves deceit, cheating and an occult move to satisfy their base urges. In the case of Summer’s mother, her currency was sex and she conquered married man, causing divorces, marrying them and making a good living. Seems she thought that was how love worked. Makes you feel lucky you don’t live among the ultra rich!
Summer and Whit had dark desires, and in the case of Summer, she had very low self-esteem. When she’s labeled same as her mother, she accepts all the terms, since she feels as dirty and as guilty as her. There are secrets in their past, which both are complicit to keep hidden. Only Summer’s diary knows the truth and that is the source of blackmail with which Whit dominates her.
Both Summer and Whit attend Lancaster Prep. Whit’s family are the founders and owners, and Janine (Summer’s mother) used her past dalliance with Whit’s father to win her place in the academy. They are embroiled in a dark game of sex, kink, degradation and domination. I hated to see Summer so degraded and to see her accept all the insults. She really sees herself as a whore, and as deserving of all the shame. Whit is very insulting and she just takes it, even revels in it. I hated that for her. This part of the book took just too much time. The sex was non-stop to the point I was exhausted and begging for the story to move on!
I loved seeing the arc of their personalities as Summer got more self-respect and Whit got more real. What started as obsession turned into something softer and sweeter. I wish the change had happened earlier for both, although there were many scenes that needed to happen. Over all, it was an enthralling story with characters that I saw initially as pitiful notwithstanding the financial power they profess. Being raised loveless and without strong moral compass is a tragic lack. And both Whit and Summer were victims. It was a joy to finish the book and enjoy the HEA. After all that debacle I felt I deserved all the cheesiness and I got it!
