7/10.
And ending like...at first it reminded me of the end of 2001 a space odyssey. Very odd. Very R, not used to that.
adventurous dark mysterious medium-paced

Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I read American Gods a few years ago, and I am so happy that I chose the full cast audio for my re-read prior to watching the show. I am very picky with narrators, and I find full cast audio to often times be very jarring while trying to immerse myself in the story. Thankfully, this full cast audio was done very well and I picked up so much more this time around.
SpoilerI was also very pleased that this version included a little extra scene at the end where Shadow meets Jesus. It was so fun to see Gaiman's take on Jesus and made me smile.
Highly recommended!

American Gods was amazing, and it is nearly impossible to review as it is inclusive of so many things. I suppose it is important to tell you that my favorite things were the cameos, the hints and allusions to different people from history and mythology. American Gods had my heart breaking, and kept me thinking throughout. I had the best time putting clues together and enjoyed when I finally realized just who each character was representing. I loved that. I loved that Gaiman was able to create such an unusual world within one that already exists. I loved Shadow, I loved Wednesday, and Sam was definitely my spirit animal. Also the cons and the twists that I didn't see coming? That rarely happens to me. I was thrilled at how things came together at the end. I honestly cannot say enough about American Gods. If you enjoy mythology, mystery, cons, and unlikely heroes, then this is absolutely the book for you.

I loved this book. I especially liked the dreams and the stuff about reality being thin in certain places. Gaiman beautifully provides beliefs with bodies.

a long read (obviously), but a very very good one. everybody should read this, i think. this is a story about a man who leaves prison to a world that's harboring a war where the mortal people don't even know it's happening. a war between the old world and the new, and how these could possibly co-exist. let shadow rest, he's done so much and he deserves some god damn peace.

Great characters, interesting plot, very very unique.

Terrible ending.

What a strange book. I liked it but t I have trouble telling people what it's about when they ask.

I'll try to keep it short.
Gods from other cultures are present in America. After all, the good ol' USA is the massive melting pot. Except, wait. Sometimes there are gods from different cultures that are very similar and are, in fact, the same god. These old gods are going to war with the new gods of America--media, fast food, the internet.
When Shadow is released from prison and given a job by an old crackpot named Wednesday, he is thrust into the middle of the old and new gods' struggle for survival. In a world of disappearing cultures and traditions, where one god is replaced by the latest and greatest, is anyone safe?
Great storytelling and voices. Highly inventive. You will fall in love with the characters.
Side notes:
1. I picture Joe Manganiello playing the main character, Shadow--big, muscular, all-around nice guy.
2. I'm not self-aggrandizing, but Gaiman's idea is something I have also thought about. This is one reason why I wrote the Keening Trilogy... just mine is not sooooo... complex. I didn't dare take on multiple pantheons.
