Usually I love Neil Gaiman books for their whimsy & magic. This one was a little too meandering and definitely the most adult I’ve read from him so far. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t keep me riveted.
I didn't have properly any expectations regarding this book but I felt like it could have been so much better and it was a plot that had way more potential than this. it was so slow paced and most of the characters, including the main ones, were super bland. I felt that in the last 150 pages he started throwing random nonsense plot twists to keep us engaged but I am just overall saddened because it could have been a really interesting mystery fantasy book.
Very creative, a neat take on some American history and culture. I kept with it until it was finished.
An absolutely fantastic (if long) read! I'd only read Gaiman's short stories before this - I liked most of them - but honestly didn't know how I'd handle a novel.
Well! Perhaps I'm a bit partial to an author who handles mythology so well across cultures, and gives such a beautifully dry sense of humor to his main character. Perhaps... Still, I am now an unabashed fan. Every time I worried that he had trundled off down some tangent too far, the path would loop back around and make a wholly applicable point. Each character had all three dimensions - and a fourth if I took the time to dive back into my mythological history books. Just wait until you meet Mr. Nancy...
Obviously, I could go on, but I'll leave it at this: Next time you find yourself looking for a long, fun, but intensely absorbing book, you might want to check this one out.

Didn't know the Author is a predator when I started reading. I feel sick.
Very enjoyable, great page-turner. I kept finding myself recommending it to people before I’d even finished.
Sorry - I don't get it. I found the book tedious, couldn't care less about any of the characters and just wanted it to end. Reading the other reviews I seem to have completely missed the point (or read another book entirely?) The problem was probably that I didn't identify with any of the characters and so missed out on the details and deeper meaning that was hidden amongst them..?!? I don't know and I will not be reading the book again to find out. I only finished it because a friend lent me a copy with a recommendation - and I felt I owed it to him to at least read to the end. Maybe I don't know / care enough about America / the Gods to appreciate what a 'great work of literature' this is ?!?!?!?!?
Amaaaaaaziiiiing.
I can never watch I Love Lucy the same way ever again, however. It makes me a little sad.
I can read this book over and over and always learn something new.
I find it a little scary.
Originally finished in May 2013.
