I ate this up so fast. I have never read any other books by Sue Lynn Tan, but once I started I couldn’t put it down. From start to finish I was just really into the story and I didn’t feel like the world created was too complicated so I grasped it quickly. There were some twists that I wasn’t expecting and I thought the ending was great without being overly predictable.

An interesting and whimsical approach with themes like grief, love, and world-building in a Chinese mythological setting.
The story is set in the same world as Daughter of the Moon Goddess, a book that I loved. But with this one, I had a bit more of a struggle to connect and like the characters.
The romance was a big part of the book, which I don't usually mind, but the tropes... That lessened my enjoyment since you could tell this was heavily with tropes: rivals/enemies to lovers, insta-love (but not reallysince they've met before ), and, in my defense, Insta-love is my most hated trope out there.
Due to the development of the plot, it was hard for me to fully enjoy the story since we were just 30% in and my girl was already going through love bombing... There wasn't much depth to it, not even when it was revealed that they've met before . I still enjoyed the romantic moments between the characters, especially when he says: "touch her again and you die." The romance was cute.

its just the fact that it is really underwhelming at first. i had to stop reading for a few days until i finally went back to reading it. but it gets good from the middle-end part of the book. i really like the plot
