I loved this. I think it's beautiful and I always love a standalone! The characters are interesting, the world building is beautiful and the tension is tense! The romance is also lovely! All in all, I had a great time!

DID NOT FINISH: 18%

DNF (18%, through Ch7). This was (obviously) not for me. I found the writing to be all tell no show and very repetitive, which led me to start skimming as early as chapter 5 to try to get to new information or plot progression. The main character Liyen's personality was one note (gods sUcK) and there is zero chemistry or actual enemies-to-lovers development between her and Zhangwei (God of War) since they start immediately lusting for each other. Overall very boring.

I loved her other books and enjoyed reading this one but it felt more grounded in the romance veryyyy troupey troupes rather than the mythology foundation of the others. It was predictable and a bit of a drag after the initial set up. There were also some parts that didn’t make sense to me- (spoiler) how she ended up in her place in the mortal realm- did she restart her life as an infant? and if the wuxin had been imprisoned so long- how did that correlate to only being in the mortal realm for a lifetime? I liked the side characters a lot- but a lot of the messaging in the book felt very “forge your own path love yourself and you’re more than the sum of your parts” cliche. Like if Rae Dunn was a book message. Idk I enjoyed it!! But I wouldn’t read it again or necessarily recommend over other things.
