I honestly thought I would not like this book- I was so wrong. This was so well done. Complex and beautiful. My heart is happy after this epic journey hence 5 stars.

I started reading this before knowing it was a companion to another series. Not sure where it fits, because I have not read The Daughter of the Moon Goddess. I will admit that because of this, the world building in the beginning did feel rushed and was hard to wrap my head around. If I had learned a lot about from the previous books and it was meant as a refresher, I think it would have been fine. But it took me about 100 pages to really feel like I was vibing.

I liked the politics of the world and the magic system was interesting, especially the Wuxin's. The Gods seemed appropriately fickle and the romance did have my swaying at a few moments. The middle 50% was the best part of the book.

The main critique I had was the FMC was incredibly annoying in the beginning. Her emotions and decisions were so back and forth. It gave me whiplash, especially for someone who is supposed to be a role model/leader. I also thought the big bad evil guy's reason for being evil was incredibly dumb. Like, his fragile male ego was the downfall of an entire world? Idk, the beginning and end just didn't hit.

Reading through Liyen's internal monolog for 400+ pages was torture. Getting through this book was a slog. The dialog flowed so unnaturally and felt like perfect little speeches scripted to make a heavy handed point and Liyen was truly so insufferable and immature.
