Liyen's grandfather, the emperor of a mortal kingdom under the thumb of the immortals, risks his life to save her from being poisoned, and the gods kill him for it. Now the empress, Liyen has to take over the throne and try to navigate around the gods that are controlling the fate of her people, and has to work alongside the God of War.
I read this because I loved Daughter of the Moon Goddess, even though I really disliked the sequel to the duology. This synopsis had me worried that it wasn't really for me, but I ended up giving this a try after finding it for a steep discount. Unfortunately, I was right.
I don't think there was anything in this book that worked for me. Occasionally I liked the writing style, but not as much as DotMG. I thought our main character wasn't built out very well, or really any of the characters. Or the plot! Or the world! Everything in this story felt so flat and like it wasn't happening for a lot of reason. The stakes didn't feel remotely real. The romance was entirely instalove - which, yes, there's a reason given for why that is, but that doesn't erase that problem entirely. I honestly just don't want to think about this book anymore.
Overall, there wasn't anything that I thought was really successful here. This is one of my least favorite books I've read this year!

it’s crazy how she pulled the literal god of war despite being a bit infuriating to follow

I loved this. A gorgeous standalone fantasy romance set in a rich and intriguing world, well-written and with a satisfying conclusion! If only more books of this calibre existed.
The plot twists and turns, keeping the reader guessing. Admittedly this was also the book's one downside in my opinion: a few of the reveals left me a bit confused and there were one or two things I would have liked to know more about. Despite this, I still had a fantastic time reading this and thought the worldbuilding was lush and evocative.
I really liked the characters and the central romance was so well-written: absolutely swoon-worthy.
Definitely worth the read - you won't be disappointed!

While I enjoyed this read, I feel like the third part undid a lot of the first two? I didn’t hate but there parts of the plot and the characters personalities that annoyed me.
