Sue Lynn Tan writes beautifully. Her prose elegant. I preface this with I am not a frequent consumer of romantasy, so I do not like the usual tropes and really only read when I want something sweet. If you are looking for a predictable, but well written love story set in a fantasy world for vibes, then this is a good choice. I did not find the romance incredibly interesting. Personally the trope of “former lovers separated by memory loss and the person is drawn to their former lovers by their dormant memories” is a cheap shot. And it’s not interesting when the man has been in love with her the whole time. It feels demeaning that her actual anger is rooted in her ignorance of certain aspects. I found the villains and side characters more interesting. But I think this is a really nice vibes read.

This put me in a slump, but that may be because I just need to take a break from fantasy. I love that more and more East Asian fantasy books are being published. The general premise of Immortal was intriguing and I enjoyed the suspense of Liyen's journey. But a lot of this also felt like a trope checklist. And I was not invested in the romantic element at all, unfortunately.
