3.5 ⭐️ i seem to be the minority here but i’m having some mixed feelings about this book! initially things felt very chaotic, and i didn’t love liyens character, and much of the romance felt unearned, or rather than a slow and subtle build it was a game of constant back and forth. i know much of this fit into place once the twist was revealed, but it didn’t mean that i wasn’t annoyed whilst reading a majority of the book. the ending also seemed to drag on — new threads were constantly being pulled with solutions seeming out of the blue to me, or like there were a lot of holes left (like how did chengyin get back? did i miss that part? lol)

but regardless, this world was new to me and enchanting, and at the end of the day, the romance and characters still endearing and enjoyable, overall.

Honestly, I have no complaints: beautiful prose, wonderful dialogue, a great mix of both interesting worldbuilding, fantasy, complex characters, politics, and romance without ever feeling like one of those things weighs so heavily as to distract from the others. It flows seamlessly between topics - the narrative never drags, the plot never plods along, it's simply excellent all the way through. Read this book.
