3.5 I enjoyed the short stories... some more than others. The Sarah Addison Allen short story didn't follow her usual formula and was a bit disjointed at one part, but I am still happy I read. When I looked the book up at the library, I thought I was getting a novel by her. I didn't realize it was a collection of short stories from four different authors.

This collection of short stories by various authors was rather underwhelming. I couldn't really see all they all fit together. Additionally, I didn't care for the writing of a few of the authors. The section by Sarah Addison Allen was well-written, but I didn't quite understand what this short story was supposed to do or which character it was supposed to be about. Lots of confusion, despite the nicely turned words.
Overall, I suggest you skip this.

I just don't think I'm an anthology fan. First story did not grab me.

I REALLY wanted to like this book. Sarah Addison Allen is one of my go-to authors when I want to get lost in a world full of magical possibilities. I realize this book is not exactly the same premise, especially as it's written as an anthology with different authors, but I was hoping for something along the same lines. I felt that this book was a bit of a mess. I couldn't tell if the stories were supposed to be continuations of one another or be completely different stories. It seemed like some of the characters were the same, but they showed up in ways that seemed kind of forced to me. I also had a hard time reading a whole story written in NC mountain patois, and I'm from NC, so hearing people speak that way isn't new to me. Nonetheless, I found it distracting. Because of these things, I found myself just skimming pages to see if something would grab me before I got to the end of the book. Unfortunately, it didn't...

If you're looking for what you've come to expect from Sarah, I recommend you go back and re-read her previous books to hold you over until a new one comes out.

rather than try putting books in a 'not interested' folder, I'm going to claim I read them and give a low rating. Putting in not interested, the algorithm seems to think I like the book.
