I spent my bank holiday in a caravan reading this and wow. Has been on my tbr for so long and finally got around to it. It was gritty, heartbreaking, and so so real. It was tough to read in some places due to the themes and events l, but the story’s power pushes you through. An excellent read.

I had to take a break from this one half way through, because of how heavy it was, but I’m so glad I went back to it. The two narratives are so well woven together and the prose is so immersive. Thanks for breaking my heart Douglas.

A hard read at times but genuinely engaging with a plethora of characters who were both hard to like but understandable. Mungo, James, Jodie and some secondary individual gave moments of hope and softness that the story so desperately needed. There were moments where I just didn't want to pick up this book to begin reading it again due to the content matter but I also felt compelled to finish it which I think shows it's strengths.
It felt gritty and based in an unfortunate reality for these individuals. Each character stood out in their own way and their situation brought them together and tore them apart. You just wanted a lot of the characters to do better or to at least try to do better than they had accepted themselves to be.
Mungo worked as a central character. Something about him made you really root for him and made you want him to get something, anything good out of his life. He felt very authentic.
The ending... Wow, I am frustrated but it also fits perfectly for this story.
A thoroughly good read but not one I will be picking up again anytime soon.
