Devastating

“Mungo's capacity for love frustrated her.
His loving wasn't selflessness; he simply couldn't help it. Mo-Maw needed so little and he produced too much, so that it all seemed a horrible waste. It was a harvest no one had seeded, and it blossomed from a vine no one had tended.”

FFFFFFFFCKK all these adults!

I know life can hit really hard, but when children aren't protected, it makes me want to cage fight!

A really hard and at times, depressing read but with brilliant commentary on:
- Motherhood (and some of the ways it can thrust itself upon women and young girls.. sometimes even with children they didn't bear themselves)
- Queerness
- Childhood abuse
- Sibling comradery

There were so many hard to like characters in this book, but more frustratingly than that, as the reader, we understand them *punches myself in the face*

Very well written, great pacing and tone, an easier read than Shuggie even though it doesn't shy way from anything and I would definitely wait until you're in the right head space for it.

fuck all these adults lol the sliver of hope in the end was very much needed

Some aspects that stood out for me include:

The dialogues feel so real, and every character is fully developed; I felt like these people exist.
The simplicity of the characters' motives makes the story believable and heartbreaking.
The descriptive aspects of the book feel a bit poetic, somehow finding beauty in the decadence.
The world presented in this book is raw and brutal, yet the book is so beautiful <3
