Another Day in the Colony is a no-holds-barred, straight talking, in-your-face, unflinching collection of essays on the realities of being Aboriginal and living with the realities of racism and colonialism in so-called Australia. The author shares her experiences and unabashedly tells her truth. From growing up with a white mother and an Aboriginal father to standing up against racism in academia, in court, in literature, and in the media these essays are drawn from her personal experiences and contain a mix of hurt, rage and resignation, as well as plenty of love, respect and admiration for indigenous peoples. Her uncompromising stance on how those who have just discovered indigenous heritage should behave is sure to ruffle some feathers. You don’t have to look very long or hard into the treatment of Blackfullas to understand why her motto is “Fuck hope. Be sovereign.” This book is not written for a white audience, but white readers who want to learn and understand, who are willing to be confronted and pushed into thought (and hopefully action) stand to gain greatly from the time spent with this book. As a non-Australian reading this book helped me better understand the position of First Nations people there, and how it is both similar and different to that of First Nations people in other colonised countries.
