I think I just found my new series to obsess over! I love everything about this book. I think all the different POVs might be my favorite aspect because you get little snippets into very different characters and storylines. Lia and Jace are both awesome characters. They are tough and independent, yet manage to work well together in spite of being enemies. Their banter is great, and the romantic tension is delicious. I love all the “side” characters too and I cannot wait to dive more into each of their stories. I even love the villains. No, not in that way (calm down)…they’re just really good villains, and I look forward to them all dying awful deaths.
The audiobooks are wonderful too! Amanda Dolan is great at bringing out different emotions and I find her voice to be very pleasant to listen to. I have listened to other books by Corvin King before and as always, I love his work. His voice is dreamy AF and he does great job with his narrations.

Was the story an original concept, not really. Was the writing a bit obvious, sure. Was I annoyed with some aspects of the FMC and how she comes off a bit dense and oblivious, yes. However, there was just something about it that I really enjoyed. It was resfreshing to read a fantasy book that doesn't have a 200 year old fae male and an 18 yr old FMC. I am slightly disappointed that a magic system wasn't described, which is odd for a fantasy novel. I do have the expectation that one will show up in the next novel, we shall see.
Also, this author certainly knows how to create some truly evil characters!
While I can already guess how this trilogy will end, I am definitely looking forward to the next books.

From the start, I loved Lia. The deck is stacked against her from the start, but that only pushes her to be more fierce and cunning in a world where even her existence is dangerous. Her enemies are truly awful beings, so you know they’ll get what’s coming to them as the series progresses - and I can’t wait.
New book boyfriend alert. Of course, I have to mention Jace because I loooooove him. He tries so hard to view Lia as the enemy and keep his distance, but it turns out that not everything is as it seems.

I enjoyed this book but dont see it becoming a favorite.
Starting with the world building theres not too much to it. Just enough to stage the main areas but nothing hard to follow.
The romance starts with Kellan and Lia. Kellan is a terrible person and you quickly began to hate him. He treats Lia like dirt and is truly a terrible person. Then we meet Jace. There wasnt a ton of tension which i tend to prefer but they quickly realize they have feelings for each other which we learn towards the end is much more than a simple attraction.
I loved Avery and Finn. They are so sweet and innocent. Kai is the worse and I am truly intrigued in seeing how his story unfolds.
The kings death was the saddest although i saw it coming. Wasnt super surprised by how he died either.
Zaela has a good heart but is very stubborn so im sure shell make a great team with Lia. Gaege is hilarious and I love his character.
The ending wasnt crazy mind blowing but definitely leaves you on a cliffhanger and read for book 2.
Overall i enjoyed it just thought some parts were a bit predictable.

I ultimately ended up enjoying this book but I will admit that the beginning almost had me DNF because of how utterly idiotic or maybe naive would be a better term to use, was being. Once I pushed through the initial portion of the story things started getting better. I feel like the writing improved a lot from the start of the book to the end of the book, though I still have some critiques. Overall, this was a solid start to a series. As I said, the writing does pick up and the book does become pretty action packed. There’s a fairly large cast of characters and we do get multi-povs throughout the book. Emilia has written some true villains that I hope meet really, really painful ends in future books…
I have seen people stating they DNFed because the fae didn’t have magic/there’s no magic in this book. While that is correct for this book, magic does come into play in the next book…

A secret is revealed that will start a war. Lives lost over revenge. A forbidden love that could save the world.
From the very first page, I was hooked!
